Alonso: Renault should sign Kubica

F1 News - Latest F1 News

Fernando Alonso thinks Renault would be wise to pick Robert Kubica to fill his vacant seat now that he is heading to Ferrari. Kubica is believed to be on the brink of signing a Renault deal, with the team set to announce its driver plans next week.

Alonso and Kubica are good friends and have expressed their mutual respect many times in the past - and the Spaniard reckons the Pole is the best choice to take his old drive.

“You know how I rate Kubica, he is one of my best friends and one of the best drivers in the world," said Alonso. "So if they have any chance, then I recommend him.”

But he added that he had no inside knowledge of what Renault intended. “I have no idea [who will be signed], but hopefully a good driver that can fight for races and championships in the next years," said Alonso.

Kubica reckons Alonso and Ferrari will be a good fit - and that the deal is no surprise given the months of rumours.

"The speculation has been there for a very long time and I would say it is not a big surprise," said Kubica. "A two times world champion, one of the best drivers, if not the best driver of the last six or seven seasons, is going to one of the best teams - I think that's normal."

But he said Alonso could not be certain of success at Ferrari.

"If Ferrari will get a quick car, then of course Fernando, as Felipe [Massa], will be one of the contenders," said Kubica. "But as we have seen this year, it might not be like this. Who would have said that Force India would be quicker in the last three races than a Ferrari? Even five or six months ago you would not say this, and this is what has happened. I don’t know what to expect from next year and I don’t know who will be quick."

Alonso is confident that Ferrari's tough 2010 will prove to be a one-off, though.

"I think this year has been a strange season with the top teams not fighting for the world championship, but I think Ferrari and McLaren are still the best two teams in Formula 1 and will fight in the future," he said.
