Bernie backs Todt for FIA presidency

F1 News - Latest F1 News

Formula 1’s commercial impresario Bernie Ecclestone has thrown his weight behind Jean Todt’s bid for the FIA presidency. The ex-Ferrari team boss is vying with rallying legend and former MEP Ari Vatanen to take the helm of the governing body when Max Mosley’s term of office ends next month.

Mosley named Todt as his preferred successor when the Frenchman announced his candidacy in July, and on Friday Ecclestone added his backing.

“I have known Jean for many years. He is a most reliable, gifted and trustworthy person,” said Ecclestone. “He is determined and dedicated to whatever goals he sets himself and I admire and respect him greatly for everything he has achieved. The FIA needs a president that is strong, capable and with experience at the highest levels of motor sport. Jean is by far the most knowledgeable and capable candidate for this vitally important role. I hope everybody will support his candidacy.”

Underlining the momentum that appears to be gathering behind his campaign, Todt also announced high-profile support from the promoters of the World Rally Championship, the World Touring Car Championship and the FIA GT Championship.

The Bahrain Motor Federation has also declared for Todt. BMF president Sheikh Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa said his country’s motorsport priorities were “significantly aligned” with those of the Frenchman. The FIA presidential election takes place on October 23.
