Glock slams Toyota axe rumours

F1 News - Latest F1 News

Timo Glock has labelled reports suggesting he was told after qualifying in Singapore last Saturday that he would be dropped by Toyota for 2010 “the funniest I’ve ever read”.

With uncertainties remaining over its F1 future beyond the end of this season, Toyota has yet to confirm either of its drivers for the next campaign with incumbents Glock and Jarno Trulli waiting for their 2010 plans to be finalised.

However, stories originating from the German press last weekend, and subsequently picked up by various internet outlets, claimed the day before finishing second in Singapore Glock had been effectively “fired” by the team after president John Howett told him that it would not be taking up the option it had on his services for next season.

Asked to clarify the speculation in Thursday’s pre-event press conference at Suzuka, Glock took the opportunity to rubbish the reports and said that while he is assessing other options, staying at Toyota into a third season remains a possibility.

“The truth is that the stories after the race were the funniest I’ve ever read on the internet – [the idea that] I was fired after qualifying was just bulls**t,” he said. “The point is that we had some discussions already a couple of weeks ago and we stay open – Toyota is open to me and we also have the possibility to look around. That’s it really. There is nothing new, there were no discussions over the weekend about any contract situation, and that’s all I can say. There are rumours going around – I think maybe for some people it was a bit boring on Saturday and they had to find a story for Sunday.”

The driver market is expected to move into overdrive following the confirmation of Fernando Alonso’s move to Ferrari, with other teams having waited for the Italian team to make its move before deciding on their line-ups.
