Webber: Title not a two-horse race

Monday, 17 May 2010 10:15

For the second race running the Australian led from start to finish to win in textbook fashion, outpacing his wunderkind team-mate Sebastian Vetteland withstanding four safety car periods that whittled away hard-earned leads.
Webber said winning in Monaco was the crowning moment of his racing career to date.
“To win here is very special,” he said.
“It started yesterday when qualifying went well, but this place is such a test for two hours, and I knew I had a lot of work to do.
“The track was changing quite a lot during the grand prix, we had backmarkers and a lot of safety cars, so we were tested quite often.
“Getting the restarts and the tyre pressures right – all the basics that could test were in front of us today.
“So it’s a very, very rewarding win and I’m absolutely elated.
“To join Ayrton Senna and those guys [as a winner] around here… it’s a real blue riband event.”
Red Bull’s second 1-2 finish of the season moved the team to the top of the constructors’ championship table, and left Webber and Vettel tied on 78 points at the head of the drivers’ standings.
But despite his jubilation, Webber rejected suggestions that the title race was shaping up into a private Red Bull duel.
“Two races ago, everyone was saying someone else [would be champion]; in two races’ time they might be saying someone else again,” he said.
“I understand you guys have to write stuff, but no one knows who is going to be in the hunt with a few races to go.
“For sure we have a very good foundation and we’re in a good position – we’re leading both championships.
“But we’ve got some different venues coming up, and keep in mind that engines are going to come into play in the back part of the championship.
“There’s a lot of things that could still happen.
“It’s a good position to be in; I’d rather be here than 40 points behind. We have a good tally, but I don’t think it’s between two guys. No, too early [to say that].
“Let’s go to Turkey, do that, and keep chipping away.
“I’ve been around the block long enough to know that things can change very quickly in this game, so I’m keeping my feet on the ground.”
